SUP Little Sugar

Northwest Arkansas's best paddling feature is now on the map β€” let's float!

Little Sugar Creek Β· Bella Vista, AR β†’ Missouri.
~3 or ~7 miles of flat water through the heart of NWA.

USGS Gauge Β· Station 07188838

Today's Conditions

Checking the gauge…

Current conditions are one data point. Use the full range below to understand where today's level falls.

Below 1.7 ft Too Low: not enough water
1.7 – 1.9 ft Marginal: may drag in spots
1.9 – 2.5 ft Ideal: perfect for all levels
2.5 – 3.0 ft Elevated: more current, use judgment
Above 3.0 ft Do Not Float: stay off the creek

Flow is measured at the USGS gauge station on Little Sugar Creek. Gauge height in feet is the primary indicator for floatability, not volume. Data updates approximately every 15 minutes. Ideal range is 1.9–2.5 ft. Above 3.0 ft, stay off the water.

πŸ›Ά What to Float It On

Little Sugar is best experienced on a SUP board or sit-on-top kayak. Tubes and similar inflatables are strongly discouraged: the creek is genuinely shallow in spots, and you'll spend more time dragging across limestone and scraping your knees than floating. A SUP or kayak keeps you moving efficiently from put-in to take-out and makes the whole trip what it's meant to be. Tubes are tempting, but this creek has a way of making you regret it quickly.

Along the Way

What You'll See Along the Way

From a mid-float restaurant stop to a hidden cave. Here's what to look for.

🍽️ Food & Drink · Primary Route

Little Sugar Bistro

~Mile 1.3 from put-in

Pull your board onto the beach or bank and walk up to the restaurant and bar. It's right on the creek, one of the best mid-float stops you can make. Note that this is a temporary pull-out only, not a good spot for parking or a primary pull-out. Just a quick pit stop before getting back on the water.

🏊 Swimming · Hike · Primary Route

Little Sugar Bridge + Sugar Bluff Cave

~Mile 1.8 from put-in

A great spot to pull off for swimming and river access. If you're up for a short adventure, access the Sugar Bluff Cave via the "Danger Will Robinson" trail on the west side of the bridge (river left). It's not hard to find. Just make sure you have shoes you're comfortable hiking in.

β›³ Golf Course Stretch Β· Primary Route

Golf Course Stretch β€” Watch the Fairways

~Mile 2.0 from put-in

This section of the creek runs right alongside a golf course. Keep your eyes up and you'll occasionally spot golfers on the fairways above. More interestingly, look down: the creek bed through here is loaded with lost golf balls. Goggles are worth it if you want to actually collect them.

⚠️ Caution · Primary Route

Shallow Limestone Section

~Mile 2.1 from put-in

Quick-moving and shallow at most levels. The creek picks up a bit here as it flows over exposed limestone.

πŸ’‘ Beginner tip: Stay seated through this section. You won't flip if you're balanced, but standing up here makes it a lot easier to take a swim.

πŸ’§ Water Feature Β· Caution Β· Primary Route

Water Feature β€” Mini Waterfall

~Mile 2.3 from put-in

A small concrete feature creates a mini waterfall with about a 1-foot drop. Many people ride it seated without any trouble.

πŸ’‘ Beginner tip: Stay river right to float around the feature entirely and bypass the drop. Either way, you'll see it coming and have time to decide.

πŸ–οΈ Beach Stop Β· Extended Route Only

Dogwood Beach

~Mile 4.5 from put-in Β· Extended Route only

A great beach spot to hang out, rest, and take a snack break. Exactly the kind of place you want to find halfway through a longer float β€” pull your board up, soak it in, and keep going when you're ready.

Before You Go

Before You Go

Everything a first-timer needs to know.

You don't need to be an expert.

At recommended flow levels, this is genuinely flat water. If you can stand up and balance, you can SUP this creek. Inflatables and sit-on-top kayaks work great too. You don't need a performance board to have a great time.

Check conditions before you go.

The creek changes with rainfall. The live gauge at the top of this page tells you everything you need to know. Ideal is 1.9–2.5 ft. Above 3.0 ft, stay home. Below 1.9 ft, your board may drag in spots.

The Water Feature: heads up.

Around mile 2.3, there's a small concrete drop of about 1 foot. You can ride it seated, or take the bypass on river right to float around it entirely. Either way, you'll see it coming. You won't be surprised.

Two cars makes life easy.

Shuttle one car to the take-out before you put in. For the 3-mile route, park at the public lot near the 340 Bridge. For the 7-mile route, use the old Ford Dealership lot near MacaDoodles. It's public parking and right at the HWY 71 take-out.

Wildlife and scenery.

Blue herons are a regular sighting throughout the float. You'll likely spot several. If you fish, bring a rod; the creek holds well and it's worth the add-on. What surprises most people is how quickly you forget you're floating through a suburb. The tree canopy closes in and it genuinely feels like somewhere remote. Float through the golf course stretch and look down: the creek bed is covered in lost golf balls.

Leave it clean.

This section of Little Sugar is actively being improved and cared for by people who love it. Pack out everything you bring in. Leave it better than you found it.

What to Bring

What to Bring

A practical list for this specific float, not a generic gear guide.

Your Board or Boat

  • SUP board (inflatable or hard), both work well at recommended levels
  • Sit-on-top kayak or inflatable kayak
  • Paddle + leash
  • PFD / life jacket (required for anyone under 13, strongly recommended for all)

What to Wear

  • Quick-dry shorts or swimsuit. You will get wet at some point.
  • Water shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Flip-flops will float away.
  • Sun shirt or rash guard. There are open sections with full sun exposure.
  • Sunscreen

What to Bring

  • Dry bag for your phone, keys, and wallet
  • Water: at least 1 liter per person for the 3-mile route, 2 liters for the 7-mile
  • Snacks (or stop at Little Sugar Bistro mid-float)
  • Small first aid kit
  • Trash bag: pack out what you pack in

Optional but Worth It

  • Waterproof phone case or mount for photos
  • Hiking shoes if you want to explore Sugar Bluff Cave at the Little Sugar Bridge
  • Cooler bag clipped to board for longer floats
  • Goggles: the creek runs along a golf course and golf balls are all over the creek bed. Worth a look if you want to hunt for them underwater!
The Project

About This Project

Little Sugar Creek has been a local secret for years, known by a small circle of NWA paddlers and passed along by word of mouth. This site exists to change that.

The creek is actively being improved. A small group of people who love this place are working to make it more accessible, more beautiful, and more known. This website is part of that effort.

SUP Little Sugar is a community resource, not a commercial product. If you've floated it, tell someone. If you have photos worth sharing, reach out. This place deserves to be known.
